The 4th Commandments
Q57:Which is the 4th commandment?
A:The 4th commandment is, "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it
holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day
is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou,
nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor
thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the
LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested
the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed
it." (Exodus 20:8-11, KJV).
Q58:What is required in the 4th commandment?
A:The fourth commandment requireth the keeping holy to God such set times
as he hath appointed in his Word; expressly one whole day in seven, to be
a holy Sabbath to himself.1
1.Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.
(Leviticus 19:30, KJV).
Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded
thee. (Deuteronomy 5:12, KJV).
Q59:Which day of the seven hath God appointed to be the weekly Sabbath?
A:From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, God appointed
the seventh day of the week to be the weekly Sabbath; to continue to the end of the world, which is the
Christian Sabbath.2
1.And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it
he had rested from all his work which God created and made. (Genesis 2:3,
KJV).
2.And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to
break bread, Paul preached unto them. (Acts 20:7a, KJV).
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day. (Revelation 1:10a, KJV).
Q60:How is the Sabbath to be sanctified?
A:The Sabbath is to be sanctified by a holy resting all that day, even from
such worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days;1 and
spending the whole time in the public and private exercises of God's worship,2
except so much as is to be taken up in the works of necessity and mercy.3
1.Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest,
an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein. (Leviticus 23:3a, KJV).
2.<<A Psalm or Song for the sabbath day.>> It is a good thing
to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most
High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness
every night. (Psalms 92:1,2, KJV).
3.What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it
fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift
it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful
to do well on the sabbath days. (Matthew 12:11-12, KJV).
Q61:What is forbidden in the fourth commandment?
A:The forth commandment forbiddeth the omission or careless performance
of the duties required,1 and the profaning the day by idleness, or doing
that which is in itself sinful,2 or by unnecessary thoughts, words, or works,
about our worldly employments or recreations.3
1.Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it,
saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame,
and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your
hand? saith the LORD. (Malachi 1:13, KJV).
2.They have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.
(Ezekiel 23:38b, KJV).
3.If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on
my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable;
and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure,
nor speaking thine own words. (Isaiah 58:13, KJV).
Q62:What are the reasons annexed to the 4th commandment?
A:The reasons annexed to the fourth commandment are, God's allowing us six
days of the week for our own employments,1 his challenging a special propriety
in the seventh,2 his own example,3 and his blessing the Sabbath-day.4
1.Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest,
holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall
surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the
sabbath. (Exodus 31:15-16a, KJV).
2.Ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your
dwellings. (Leviticus 23:3b, KJV).
3.It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six
days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and
was refreshed. (Exodus 31:17, KJV).
4.3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. (Genesis 2:3a, KJV).
Jesus Teaches about the Law
Matthew 5:17-22
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
